Production Workshops Resume Operations at Maximum-Security Institution in Abai Region

Four production workshops have resumed operations at a maximum-security institution of the Penal Enforcement System in the Abai Region.

Earlier, the facility had temporarily suspended its production activities after being reorganized from a mixed-security institution into a maximum-security facility. To restart operations, the administration carried out comprehensive preparatory work, including inspections of the technical condition of equipment, creation of safe working conditions, and organization of workplaces.

Currently, four workshops are operating at the institution: the state enterprise “Enbek-Semey” producing juices and sewing products, a furniture workshop, and a woodworking workshop.

More than 100 inmates are currently employed, and in the near future an additional 50 people are expected to be provided with jobs. Wages are paid according to a piece-rate system. The products manufactured are sold not only within the region but also beyond its borders.

Inmates are employed in strict compliance with the requirements of the criminal enforcement legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

“Working in the workshop has become an opportunity for me to change my outlook on life. I have learned discipline and responsibility and realized the value of honest work. Here I am learning a profession that will help me find a job after my release and start a law-abiding life. Most importantly, I am gaining confidence in myself and the desire not to return to past mistakes,” one of the inmates shared.

According to Aydyn Kalelov, Deputy Head of the Institution, the operation of production workshops plays an important role in the rehabilitation process.

“The operation of production workshops not only provides employment for inmates but also contributes to their social adaptation and the development of professional skills,” he noted.

Further plans include expanding production capacity and increasing the range of manufactured products.
