What techniques do fraudsters use to get hold of money?

The Agency for Regulation and Development of the Financial Market warns that fraudsters use various psychological techniques to mislead citizens and gain access to their money and personal data.

Representatives of all social groups are at risk: students, pensioners, employed citizens, investors. Level of education or professional training does not always protect against fraudulent schemes. Fraudsters carefully think through scenarios, tailor communication to a specific person and actively use social engineering techniques.

One of the common methods is creating an alarming situation. Citizens are asked to make an immediate decision: "urgently transfer money", "otherwise you will miss the opportunity", "need to urgently confirm the transaction". Due to the feeling of loss of time or the so-called "risk of lost profit", a person loses his ability to critically evaluate what is happening and acts automatically.

Another frequently used technique is pressure on emotions. Fraudsters play on fear, sympathy or trust. For example, they report an unauthorized banking transaction, a violation of the law by you or your loved ones, ask for help for a “relative in trouble” or offer easy money. An emotional state prevents a person from maintaining rationality.

In order not to become a victim, it is important to remain vigilant, not to trust strangers on the Internet, not to transfer personal data and card details, not to follow dubious links and always check information through official channels.

In case of any doubts, it is necessary to interrupt the conversation, even if the person you are talking to has introduced himself as an official - a representative of law enforcement agencies, ministries or a regulator. Remember - no financial and legal issues are resolved over the phone or through instant messengers.

A calm assessment of the situation and refusal from emotional decisions are the basis of financial and digital security.
