Fire safety when using gas equipment

A large number of emergencies happen due to the fault of the person himself, people do not know the basic rules when handling equipment that uses gas.

If the gas supply has stopped, immediately close the shut-off valve at the burner and the spare one on the gas cylinder! The gas used for heating and household needs, mixing in a certain proportion with air, forms an explosive mixture. Gas can explode if it has penetrated into the room due to a malfunction of the gas pipeline or the carelessness of residents.

A small source of fire is enough for this — from a match or sparks of an electric lighting switch

Usually the gas is under pressure, for example in cylinders, gas pipelines, and as soon as the gas equipment is depressurized, an explosive gas mixture begins to form upon contact with air. A gas leak can be detected by a specific smell.

If the smell of gas appears in the house, it is prohibited:

  • light matches;
  • smoking;
  • turn on lights and electrical appliances.

  It is necessary to turn off all gas appliances, turn off the taps, ventilate all rooms, including basements.

  Check whether all the taps of the gas appliances are tightly closed.

  If the smell of gas does not disappear, or, having disappeared during ventilation, appears again, it is necessary to call the emergency gas service by phone «04» or call the unified rescue service by phone «01» (for cellular subscribers – 112).

  Gas cylinders (working and spare) for gas supply of household gas appliances (including kitchen stoves, hot water boilers, gas columns) should, as a rule, be located outside buildings in outbuildings (cabinets or under casings covering the upper part of the cylinders or gearbox) made of non-combustible materials at a blind wall wall at a distance of no closer 5 m from the entrances to the building, basement and basement floors.

Extensions and cabinets for gas cylinders should be locked and have blinds for ventilation, as well as have warning labels «Flammable. Gas».

In order to avoid accidents, it is necessary not to violate the rules for using gas in everyday life, namely, it is prohibited:

- tie ropes to gas pipelines (this violates the density of threaded connections, a gas leak may occur, then an explosion);

- dry clothes and hair over a lit stove;

- unauthorized reinstallation and repair of gas appliances, cylinders, fittings;

- leaving unattended working gas appliances;

- admission to the use of gas appliances for preschool children and persons who do not know the rules of use;

- use of an open flame to detect gas leaks (only soap emulsion should be used for this);

- install the pressure regulator without an O-ring or gasket;

- bend and twist the rubber-fabric sleeve (hose), allow damage to the outer layer of the sleeve (cuts, cracks, fractures), since gas leakage occurs in these places;

- place flammable materials and liquids near the working plate;

- use rooms where gas appliances are installed for sleeping and relaxing;

- use gas and gas stoves for room heating;

- attach gas valve parts using a spark-forming tool;

- store excess cylinders (the subscriber can have no more than one cylinder with a capacity of 50 or 27 liters).
