From October 1 to December 31, the Almaty Metro, together with Mastercard, introduced a 5 tenge fare in the subway instead of the usual 100 tenge for those who pay via mobile phone. We are talking about contactless payment for subway rides through Google Pay, Apple Pay or Samsung Pay applications, to which a Mastercard card of any bank is linked. To pay for a ride, it is enough to attach a mobile phone with an activated application to a branded reader located on the turnstile stand at the entrance to the subway.
"In general, metro travel can be paid in several ways – cash, card, metro travel card and "Onay". Payment via mobile devices is also provided, for which the promotion will be valid until the end of the year on the initiative of Mastercard. The fare paid by other means remains unchanged – 100 tenge," said Zhazira Baymukhamedova, head of the revenue collection service of the Almaty Metro.
This promotion is temporary, conducted and funded by Mastercard.
"We are glad that more and more modern payment instruments are becoming available in Kazakhstan. This promotion provides a unique opportunity not only to evaluate the convenience, speed and security of contactless payments via mobile devices with linked Mastercard cards, but also to significantly save on such frequent expenses as subway fare. Every payment with Google Pay, Apple Pay or Samsung Pay on a Mastercard card made using a smartphone or other device is as securely protected and offers the same benefits and guarantees as any other Mastercard transaction," said Rafal Trapka, Mastercard CEO in Central Asia.
