A tunnel section of Bukhtarminskaya Street with 4-lane traffic was opened in Almaty at the intersection of Bukhtarminskaya Street with the Kuldzhinsky tract. The project will increase the capacity of vehicles along Bukhtarminskaya Street by 15%, along the Kuldzhinsky tract by 20%. The total construction length of the Bukhtarminskaya Street section is 830 m, including the length of the tunnel part – 149 m.
By order of the Akimat of Almaty, in order to reduce the transport load, improve the quality of transport services, to ensure the effective functioning of the loaded transport hubs of the north-eastern part of Almaty, a project was developed in 2018 for the construction of a transport interchange at the intersection of Bukhtarminskaya Street with Kuldzhinsky tract, and construction and installation works were started in 2019.
"After the opening of the tunnel, the ring part of the transport interchange will be unloaded. Today, before the opening of the tunnel part, all cars maneuvered through the ring, where it was loaded and a large traffic jam formed. Therefore, in 2018, it was decided that it was necessary to build this interchange and provide through passage along the Kuldzhinsky tract, Bukhtarminskaya Street and facilitate travel towards the airport," said Sagyndyk Telibayev, Head of the Almaty City Mobility Department.
The transport hub is a combination of several artificial structures: a tunnel located on Bukhtarminskaya Street with retaining walls, an overpass with retaining walls, as well as roads at ground level with a U-turn ring and right-hand exits in all directions. It is expected to unload two main directions: traffic from the International Airport towards the city of Almaty, as well as from the city towards settlements – Talgar and Alatau. During peak hours, these directions are overloaded, which creates significant congestion.
"A major infrastructure project in the Turksib district for the construction of a transport interchange will be fully completed by October 31. To date, work is underway on the improvement and reconstruction of water supply networks. The capacity of the node will grow almost 5 times, up to 340 thousand cars will be able to use it per day," said Fariz Tutadze, managing director of the facility and a representative of the contractor Bazis Construction LLP.
To date, within the framework of this project, work has been carried out on the construction of the flyover of the overpass along the Kuldzhinsky tract, the tunnel part along Bukhtarminskaya Street, exits and junctions, which will increase the capacity of this transport hub. According to the project, the complete completion of the construction of this transport interchange, taking into account the improvement, is scheduled for the end of October this year.
It is worth noting that three interchanges are currently being built in Almaty: at the intersections of Seifullina Ave. – Zhansugurova St. (completion date is the end of 2024), Sain St. - Monke bi St. (traffic on Monke bi St. will open before the end of 2023, the completion date of the facility is the second quarter of 2024) and Bukhtarminskaya St. - Kuldzhinsky tract (traffic is fully open, completion of landscaping works - until the end of October). All of them will contribute to the unloading of traffic flows in Almaty.
