Flooding control plan was presented in Almaty

The plan to modernize the canal network and water facilities aimed at preventing city from flooding at the rainy season was developed in Almaty.

The downpour, which caused numerous floods, during which 33.8 mm of precipitation fell in the city on May 11, once again demonstrated the relevance of this issue.

In particular, at the intersection of Ulugbek and Sain streets, work is underway to urgently connect the ditch network to the existing collector, which will help unload the ditch networks and reduce the flow of water going to the lower parts of the city.

Work on the modernization of the ditch network is also being carried out on regularly flooded sections of Tole bi, Yassaui, Momyshuly streets and Raiymbek avenue.

It should be reminded that earlier, on behalf of akim Erbolat Dossaev, in order to solve the problem of flooding, an analysis of the technical condition of water facilities was carried out. In the course of this work, 56 sites were identified that are subject to constant flooding at the slightest fallout. It was also established the need for the reconstruction of existing ditch networks and collectors with an increase in their capacity and their connection into a single network.

There are 16 collectors in the city to drain rain and melt water. The survey showed that they are ownerless and not serviced, silted up and clogged with garbage, or have destruction. Of the total number of collectors, 12 are not connected to ditch networks. Only 4 collectors, built from 2013 to 2018 in the Alatau district, are connected to the canal networks and are functioning.

This year, a project has been developed for the construction and reconstruction of the ditch network of the city with a total length of 376 km (western part in Alatau, Nauryzbay, Auezov districts, the central part in Zhetysu, Bostandyk, Almaly districts, the eastern part in Medeu, Turksib districts).

The project provides for the reconstruction of existing canal networks, the point construction of new canals, but does not provide for the use of these networks for irrigating green spaces, does not take into account the drainage of rain and melt water into existing collectors, which will lead to flooding of individual areas.

In this regard, the project will be adjusted taking into account the reconstruction of existing ditch networks and collectors with an increase in their capacity, and the organization of connection to a single network without suspension of construction work. This will avoid flooding and organize watering of green spaces.

Today, in the western part of the city, construction and installation work is underway to build and reconstruct ditch networks with a length of 119 km, the implementation period is 2021-2023.
