The governor of Almaty Bauyrzhan Baybek noted that the pages of our history remember many hard and tragic events, but the Kazakh people never lost hope and aspiration for the future.

“We will always remember the tragic events of that time, so as Elbasy said never to repeat the sad pages of the past. The lessons of history have value only when comprehended and realized by the next generation. Today, Kazakhstan is a country where unity, harmony and peace are the main values of the people. As they say, "light burden, raised together." May our people never again experience such a tragedy. May there always be a strong citadel of our independence and a brighter future! ”, said Bauyrzhan Baybek.

From 1918 to 1933 in Kazakhstan, according to various sources, more than three million people died, of which from 1931 to 1933 more than 1.7 million. More than 100 thousand Kazakhstanis became victims of the repressions of 1937-1938. In 1997, May 31 was declared as the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repression by the Decree of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
