In Almaty there is held an international conference of «a sustainable transport of the Almaty city»

In his greeting speech the Almaty city’s governor Bauyrzhan Baibek mentined that there has been elaborated a complex scheme of road traffic organization until 2023 years including itself the general vectors of the transport development. Half of them have already been realized.

So, there have been done the outlined strips of the public transport for 96 km. which has increased the medium speed of the mobile contingent for 1.5 times and the passengers for 30 times. There has been organized one sided movement in Kurmangazy and Shevchenko steets. Making the paid parking has given the opportunity to decrease the tension in the street-road network and to increase the payments to the budget for 5 times. There has been done the bicycle corridor from mcr.Orbita till the green market. There has been installed 200 bicycle stations for 1730 bicycles. Thanks to the establishment of the marketing relationship and the exclusion of the shadow income, the omnibus park of the city is renewing. By the fund of the budget and the private carriers there have been bought 675 new buses of different sizes. BRT project is being realized . There is going to be done the LRT project preparation. The metropolitan construction is continued.

The governor mentioned that the being done reforms have been realized according to the program«Almaty-2020». It’s been accepted by the principle of crowd sourcing after the open discussion of the whole citizen, experts, international institutions, business, public organizations and etc.

"A very important aspect, as our President said in the Five Institutional Reforms, is a new relationship between government and the population, this is transparency and accountability. In our program, one of the priorities is called "City of active citizens". We are proud of the fact that Almaty residents are very active. We can react quickly, rely on them, and the townspeople help us in resolving pressing issues. The second big aspect that we rely on in our reforms is the OECD standards, which are spelled out in all key documents of our country. It is very important for us to implement the National Strategy at the local level in order to decompose this all in concrete indicators and actions. The key issue and the main priority of the Almaty 2020 program is the ecology. All that we do is transport reform, the creation of pedestrian zones and bicycle infrastructure, the introduction of paid parking lots, the allocated lanes and the renewal of the bus fleet, the transfer of CHP to gas and the ban on the construction of skyscrapers to the south of Al-Farabi Avenue, all this is aimed at improving the environment," said Bauyrzhan Baibek.

During the two-day conference with the participation of representatives of state bodies, international experts from Barcelona, Vienna, Batumi, the results achieved by the project will be presented and recommendations on further promotion of sustainable transport and urban mobility in the cities of Kazakhstan will be announced.

"Sustainable development of cities is impossible without the development of the transport system. Transport reform is considered one of the most difficult in any metropolis. An important achievement of the UNDP project "Sustainable Transport" was the development of the CSDD until 2023 - this document proposed an integrated approach to transport planning and now we see positive results in the transport sector of Almaty. In recent years, the intensity of the use of personal transport has decreased from 50% to 41% in favor of public transport, bicycles and foot traffic. I think that the experience of the country's largest metropolis will catalyze changes throughout Kazakhstan," said UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Kazakhstan, Munkhtuya Altangerel.

Foreign consultants of the project noted that a qualitative analysis of the Almaty transport system was conducted, the necessary experience was obtained by local executors, and a vector of further development was determined. For more successful development of the transport system in other cities, it is necessary to create a national strategy for improving public transport, improving legislation, training personnel, introducing new technologies, etc.
