Exactly 20 years ago, on December 10, by the Decree of the Head of State N.A. Nazarbayev was declared Astana as the capital of Kazakhstan. In his speech Almaty’s governor Bauyrzhan Baibek noted that Elbasy's initiative to move the capital was born in the most difficult for the country in the 90s. Then very few people believed in the reality of this unprecedented plan. History has proved - as far as it was a visionary, vital decision for a young independent state.
"Today Astana is the political center of the country, a symbol of modernization and an example for other regions. The capital has become a recognized city in the world where thanks to the highest international authority of Elbasy, there have been summits of the OSCE and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia, and congresses of leaders of world and traditional religions. A significant international event was the holding of the international exhibition EXPO-2017 in Astana. At the turn of the century Kazakhstan became the only state where not only the capital was transferred, but also built it practically from scratch. As our President said, "in the worst 1990s, Astana gave us the wings of hope and taught us to win in great difficulties," said B. Baibek.

He governor of Almaty stressed that this historic decision, as well as the declaration of Independence, the adoption of the Constitution, the national currency, state symbols, took place in Almaty. And today, being a financial and economic magnet, Almaty harmoniously complements the political center of our country - Astana.

"Almaty citizens - scientists, culture, art, sports, of course, civil servants became pioneers of Astana, together with all Kazakhstan people made a huge contribution to the formation of the young capital. We will always be proud of this! The transfer of the capital marked not only the birth of a modern city in the heart of Eurasia, but also breathed new life into Almaty. Our city has become the largest metropolis in Central Asia, the business center of the country, where a powerful impulse was given to the "middle class". Thanks to the constant support of Elbasy, culture, education, science, sports and tourism are developing. The image of our city has changed: the infrastructure has changed, modern buildings, schools, hospitals, kindergartens have been built. The territory of Almaty has doubled and two new districts have appeared - Alatau and Nauryzbay. Today we are carrying out a large-scale modernization of the city space according to European standards," said Bauyrzhan Baibek.
