The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on 6 August 2025 entered an order, following an evidentiary hearing, in favor of claimants BTA Bank JSC and the City of Almaty holding Ilyas Khrapunov in contempt of court.
In addition to the previously issued order requiring him to pay $221,285.31, United States District Judge John G. Koeltl specifically found that Khrapunov had violated a clear and unambiguous order entered by the court that required him to regularly report on his assets. That reporting obligation was ordered by the court following a separate, earlier contempt of court committed by Khrapunov.
The new contempt order requires Ilyas Khrapunov to regularly make more comprehensive disclosures of his assets and attempts to obtain money to pay off the substantial judgments against him, on pain of further financial penalties. Ilyas Khrapunov was also ordered to pay BTA and Almaty’s costs incurred as a result of the contempt.
