The dangers of carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide poisoning can cause serious and in some cases irreparable harm to health. The main problem is that it has no color, no smell, does not cause any sensations at all, which is why it is often called the "silent killer." Carbon monoxide, when mixed with air, is practically invisible, which is why a person notices a deterioration in his condition only after the poisoning has occurred, and is no longer able to do anything. Rescuers talk about the dangers of stove heating every day, but most people do not take preventive measures until they personally encounter a problem. In the vast majority of cases, the culprits of carbon monoxide poisoning are the owners of the house, who violate fire safety rules, do not clean the chimneys from soot and do not keep the furnace device in good condition, and their children are victims of the carelessness of their parents. If the stove is in good working order, the amount of carbon monoxide produced during the combustion of the fuel is usually not dangerous. There are cases when people, believing that the fuel in the furnace has completely burned out, close the chimney damper to save heat. Smoldering coals with a lack of air form carbon monoxide, which enters the room through leaky sections of the furnace structure. With weak draft in the chimney and without air supply, underburning of the fuel also occurs, and as a result, the formation and accumulation of carbon monoxide. Maintenance of the chimney is not too tedious - it is enough from time to time to check the draft, the tightness of the brickwork joints or the joints of the modules, and to clean the internal surfaces of soot in a timely manner. Pay special attention to inspecting the connection between the chimney and the stove. After a long downtime of the device, before making a fire, you need to open the cap of the tee and look through the pipe, making sure that the chimney is not clogged with soot, leaves and bird nests have not appeared in it (this sometimes happens). And if there is a flaw - eliminating it today, tomorrow it may be too late. For your safety, the EHS of the Ayagoz district urges you to follow the elementary fire safety rules. During the operation of furnace heating is not allowed: - leave unattended heating stoves; - the presence of cracks in the stove masonry, a clogged chimney can lead to tragic consequences; - use combustible substances (solid, liquid, gaseous) as fuel that are not provided for by the instructions for the operation of furnaces; - place fuel prepared for combustion, as well as other combustible substances and materials on the pre-furnace sheet; - heat the stoves in excess of the time set by the operating instructions; - dry combustible substances and materials (shoes, clothes, firewood) at a distance of less than 0.5 m from the surface of the stove and chimneys. - do not close the stove damper until the coals have burnt out; - take care of good ventilation; - do not leave cooking food on the stove. Dear citizens! Compliance with the above rules will allow you to exclude cases of poisoning from carbon monoxide, natural gas and prevent the occurrence of a fire associated with improper operation of the heating stove. Remember - carbon monoxide is insidious, it acts quickly and imperceptibly, so life and health depend on the speed of the measures taken. Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
