National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Astana)

The National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan – is the biggest museum in Central Asia. It is also currently the youngest museum in the region. Its opening took place on 2 July 2014. The National Museum in Astana was opened as part of the implementation of the Cultural Heritage State Programme, commissioned by President Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan.

The museum, in keeping with its importance, is located on Independence Square, considered the main square of Kazakhstan. It now forms a single architectural ensemble with the Kazak Yeli monument, the Palace of Independence, the Palace of Peace and Concord (Pyramid), the Khazret Sultan Cathedral Mosque and the National University of Arts.

The museum building consists of seven blocks, the tallest of which has nine floors. The museum complex covers an area of 74,000 square meters. There are 11 exhibition halls, with an area of over 14,000 square meters.

The museum presents the following halls: the Hall of Astana, the Hall of Independent Kazakhstan, the Hall of Gold, the Hall of Ancient and Medieval History, the Hall of History, the Hall of Ethnography as well as halls of modern art.

Besides the main exhibition halls, the National Museum has two exhibition halls. The museum also has rooms for a children's museum, a children's art center, restoration workshops, laboratories, professional storage rooms, a science library with a reading room and a conference room.

The museum impresses visitors with its high level of equipment and multimedia facilities, which meet the latest international museum standards.

Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Almaty)

If the National Museum of Kazakhstan is the youngest museum of the country and the region, the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, located in Almaty, has every reason to be considered as one of the oldest museums not only of Kazakhstan but of the whole Central Asia.

Its history goes back almost two centuries, so the collection of the museum contains truly unique exhibits, which have been kept in the Central Museum for several centuries in the history of Kazakhstan.

The modern building of the museum was built in 1985 and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful architectural constructions of Almaty and the whole Kazakhstan. The total area of the building exceeds 20,000 square meters; its exposition and exhibition area is about 7,000 square meters. The fund and exposition collections of the museum comprise about 300 thousand units of historical, archeological and ethnographic character.

The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan presents to visitors expositions in four main halls:

  • Hall "Paleontology and Archaeology", which includes two complexes: paleontological and archaeological. The exhibits of the first complex are presented according to 12 geological periods. Archeological complex includes the following sections: Stone Age, Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, Hunno-Sarmatian era and Middle Ages;
  • The hall of historical ethnography which is devoted to the history of Kazakhstan from the 15th century until the beginning of the 20th century. The exposition of this hall shows the peculiarities of the traditional culture of the Kazakhs, their economic way of life, spiritual culture, etc;
  • The hall, which includes expositions: "History and ethnography of people living in Kazakhstan" and "Kazakhstan during the Great Patriotic War";
  • The Modern Kazakhstan Hall, showing the history of Kazakhstan since the proclamation of independence in 1991 up to the present day.

Abilkhan Kasteev State Art Museum (Almaty)

Abilkhan Kasteev State Art Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan located in Almaty is the biggest art museum of the country and the leading research and educational center of Kazakhstan in the field of visual arts. Here you can get an idea of the fine and applied arts of Kazakhstan as well as see collections from other countries.

The official history of the museum is not as long as its actual creation. So, the decision on creation of the Museum of art, named by Almaty citizens also "Kasteevka", was made only in 1976, however the collection was based on the funds of the Kazakh State Art Gallery named after Taras Shevchenko. However, the collection was based on the funds of the Kazakh State Art Gallery, which had existed since 1935. The collection of the museum also includes exhibits of the Republican Museum of Applied Arts, which was founded in 1970.

In 1984 the museum was named after Abilkhan Kasteev, People's artist of Kazakh SSR (1904-1973). He is considered to be the founder of Kazakh fine arts, and his works can be seen on the museum's website.

The exposition of the museum includes the following big blocks of works:

  • Works of arts and crafts of Kazakhstan. This exposition presents the masterpieces created by Kazakh craftsmen. There is a big collection of leather, wood, silverware and works of carpet weaving masters;
  • Visual Arts of Kazakhstan. Among the artists whose works are on display at the museum are such masters as Khludov, Telzhanov, Sidorkin, Kalmykov, Kasteev, Cherkassy, Leontiev, Nauruzbayev, etc;
  • Russian art. The museum's rich collection will delight art lovers with works by such authors as Repin, Shishkin, Aivazovsky, Borisov-Musatov, Petrov-Vodkin, Levitan, Tropinin, Rokotov, Kiprensky, Kustodiev, Savrasov, Borovikovsky, and others. Those who are interested in the fine arts of the Soviet period will see works by Konchalovsky, Yuon, Yablonskaya, Plastov, Saryan, Korin and others;
  • The Art of Western Europe. There are also works by English, Dutch, French, German and Italian masters. One can see an etching by Rembrandt, works by Hals, Hudon, Dürer, Bourdon, Duguet, Quasewo, Schongauer, etc;
  • Oriental Art. Works of art from India, China, Japan and Korea come here.

State Museum of Traditional Musical Instruments (Almaty)

The building of the Museum of Folk Instruments of Kazakhstan is an example of wooden architecture of Vernyi (the settlement that gave rise to the modern Almaty) from the beginning of the XX century.

The building was constructed in 1908 according to the design of outstanding architect A.P. Zenkov. The facade of the building is decorated with wooden carvings and Kazakh national patterns are used in the decoration.

Originally the museum building was called the "Officers' Club"; after 1918 it was renamed the "Post and Telegraph Office", then there was the "Krasnaya Zvezda" cinema and the house of officers of the Central Asian Military District.

The plaque on the building says that in October-November, 1918 the First Semirechenskaya regional Congress of Soviets was held here.

The State Museum of Traditional Instruments is a very interesting and comfortable museum for visitors; besides, it has become one of the places of interest in Almaty for many years.

The museum itself is young; it was founded in 1980. In 2012-2013 the museum underwent a large-scale reconstruction and is now equipped with the latest equipment which enables it to present its collection in a most interesting and informative way. The museum is located in the 28 Panfilov Heroes Park, in a building which is classified as a historical and architectural monument of Kazakhstan.

There are seven exhibition halls for the visitors: the hall of archeology, the hall of percussion-noise and wind instruments, the hall of memorial musical instruments, the hall of dombra and kobyz instruments, the halls of the peoples of the world, the hall of temporary exhibitions and presentations and the concert hall.

The collection includes old Kazakh folk musical instruments collected from all over Kazakhstan. There are personal dombras of poets, zhyrau and composers Abay, Zhambyl, Makhambet, Amre Kashaubayev, Dina Nurpeisova and Nurgisa Tlendiyev. The collection also includes instruments that belonged to famous Kazakh singer-improvisers and composers.

In addition to the country's largest museums, located in the cities of Astana and Almaty, there are many regional museums, ranging from memorial to historical, and from art to specialized. Each of Kazakhstan's regional centers has history and local history museums with their own unique collections, revealing the path and development of each region.
