During the January events, 238 people were killed

August 16, 2022 – At the site of the Central Communications Service under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan announced a complete list of 238 people who died during the January riots in Kazakhstan.

The Commissioner for Human Rights in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Elvira Azimova, has raised this issue with the Prosecutor General's Office and other bodies since January 8, 2022.

Thanks to the constructive dialogue and open discussion that took place, the Ombudsman achieved the adoption of a decision by the Prosecutor General's Office on the merits of the issue.

Currently, law enforcement agencies are investigating more than 200 criminal cases on the facts of the death of people during the «tragic January». A set of measures has been taken to establish the factual circumstances in all these cases.

During the briefing, the representative of the Prosecutor General's Office noted that during the January events, 238 citizens were killed, including 19 employees of law enforcement agencies, 6 people died from torture. As of today, the circumstances of the death have been established and the investigation continues for 176 persons. 955 suspects were put on trial, 834 citizens were sentenced to various punishments, including 636 to non-custodial punishments. Currently, 292 suspects are being held in custody.
