The European Union made a statement on the results of the referendum in Kazakhstan
The European External Relations Service has published a statement on the results of the republican referendum in Kazakhstan.
The statement says that the EU takes note of the results of the constitutional referendum in Kazakhstan, which took place on Sunday, June 5.
«At this referendum, the people of Kazakhstan supported important constitutional amendments aimed at strengthening democracy in the country.
The EU welcomes the political reforms initiated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on March 16 in addition to the socio-economic reforms initiated after the tragic events of January», the publication says.

The EU also welcomed the decision to seek the opinion of the public directly and invite the OSCE ODIHR to monitor the referendum. It is noted that in the future it will be extremely important for Kazakhstan to fully implement the recommendations of the OSCE ODIHR.

Together we are working to fulfill our obligations under our enhanced Partnership and cooperation agreement, including in areas such as ensuring fundamental freedoms of peaceful assembly, expression, and association, as well as developing our interconnectedness, trade, and cooperation», the EU official added.
Earlier, the final results of the republican referendum were announced in Kazakhstan.
According to the data, out of 11,734,642 citizens who have the right to vote, 7,985,769 people voted. The turnout was 68.05 percent.
77.18 percent of citizens (6,163,516 people) voted for amendments to the Constitution. Against the amendments – 18.66 percent (1,490,470 people). 2.58 percent of the ballots were declared invalid. 1.58 percent of ballots were not taken into account when counting votes.
