Political Reforms in Kazakhstan Discussed in the Parliament of Portugal

Lisbon, September 26, 2025 - Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Portugal Jean Galiev held a meeting with diplomatic adviser to the President of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic Isabel Pestana.

During the conversation, the main achievements of the reforms initiated by the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, as well as the goals and objectives of building a Fair Kazakhstan based on the formula «Strong President – influential Parliament – accountable Government» were presented.

The Ambassador drew his colleague's attention to the key guidelines announced by the Head of State in his Address to the Nation, «Kazakhstan in the era of artificial intelligence: current challenges and their solutions through digital transformation» I.Pestana noted that the Portuguese Parliament is watching the positive changes in Kazakhstan with great interest and welcomes the efforts of President Tokayev and his government to modernize the country and strengthen the rule of law.

The most promising areas of cooperation between Kazakhstan and Portugal were discussed in a pragmatic manner, namely in the fields of agriculture and agro-industry, tourism and sports, transport and logistics, digital technologies and artificial intelligence, water resources, education, etc. In the context of efforts to expand and intensify contacts in the economic, political, and cultural-humanitarian spheres, the interlocutor expressed support for the idea of opening direct air flights.

The parties also exchanged views on contemporary geopolitics, emphasizing the importance of complying with international law, resolving conflicts exclusively through diplomacy, and using parliamentary instruments to promote peace in areas of tension. The ambassador spoke about Kazakhstan's proactive activities in the international arena and the results of the country's President's participation in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

As an outcome of the conversation, the Portuguese diplomat confirmed the desire of the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, to visit Kazakhstan. The parties agreed to maintain regular contact and, relying on parliamentary diplomacy, to promote the expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries, taking into account existing potential and new opportunities.
