“Water Diplomacy”: Kazakhstan and Portugal Strengthen Ties in Strategic Sector

Lisbon, September 9, 2025 – Kazakhstan and Portugal Step Up Water Sector Cooperation Following President Tokayev’s National Address.

The Kazakh Ambassador to Portugal, Jean Galiev, met with leaders of Águas de Portugal (AdP), including board members Alexandra Serra and Eduardo Pacheco, and António Ventura, Executive Vice-President of AdP International.

During the talks, Ambassador Galiyev outlined Kazakhstan’s plans to modernize its water infrastructure, highlighting the role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence. The discussions focused on opportunities to apply AdP’s expertise in water monitoring, loss reduction, treatment, and efficient usage.

AdP expressed its readiness to forge a mutually beneficial partnership, offering technology transfer, know-how, and consultancy support.

Established in 1993, the state-owned Águas de Portugal company manages Portugal’s water infrastructure, covering collection, purification, desalination, and distribution for public use.
