Vienna, August 29, 2025 – A thematic event dedicated to the International Day against Nuclear Tests was held at the United Nations Office in Vienna. The event was initiated by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the International Organizations in Vienna, together with the CTBTO and the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs.
At the event, Kazakhstan’s Permanent Representative, Mukhtar Tileuberdi, delivered remarks. He noted that the initiative to establish the International Day against Nuclear Tests originates from Kazakhstan, and in 2009, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the relevant resolution.
The Ambassador also noted that Kazakhstan’s and the CTBTO’s firm commitment to building a nuclear-weapon-free world was reflected in a joint statement by Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Murat Nurtleu, and CTBTO Executive Secretary Robert Floyd. Addressing students of the Vienna International School, he urged young people to actively contribute to raising awareness about the devastating consequences of nuclear tests and to efforts aimed at preserving global peace and security.
CTBTO Executive Secretary Robert Floyd, in his remarks, highly appreciated Kazakhstan’s contribution to global efforts in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. He emphasized that the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in 1991 was an important step toward banning nuclear tests worldwide and expressed gratitude to the leadership of Kazakhstan for its consistent policy in strengthening international security.
Head of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs Rebecca Jovin, highlighting the special importance of this date, stressed that the complete ban on nuclear tests is a key element on the path toward building a world free of nuclear weapons.
