Washington, May 3, 2025 – The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the United States participated in the annual “Passport DC” festival, welcoming over 4000 guests and offering a vivid introduction to the country’s rich cultural heritage.
As part of the event, visitors were immersed in the atmosphere of Kazakh traditions. Guests were welcomed by an authentic yurt, designed in keeping with the principles of nomadic architecture, and musicians in traditional dress performing classic music compositions on the dombra. Folk dances and songs added color and energy to the cultural program, drawing strong interest from the American public.
Special attention was given to traditional Kazakh rituals. The Embassy presented elements of the ancient “Betashar” ceremony – the unveiling of the bride’s face – a ritual inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as well as “Syrga salu”, a custom marking the moment of engagement.
The Embassy also featured national cuisine and beverages, handcrafted ornaments, and information on Kazakhstan’s investment and tourism potential. Diplomats delivered thematic presentations highlighting the country’s history, cultural legacy, and current development.
Kazakhstan was among more than 70 countries that presented their cultures in the U.S. capital as part of the festival, which celebrates the international cultural diversity of Washington’s diplomatic community.
