Vienna, March 10-14, 2025 – The Kazakh delegation participated in the 68th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), which brought together over 2,100 delegates from more than 100 countries.
The delegation included representatives from Kazakhstan’s General Prosecutor’s Office, as well as the Ministries of Internal Affairs, Justice, Health, and Foreign Affairs. Particular attention was given to involving representatives of Kazakh non-governmental organizations, who presented their initiatives on addiction prevention and demand reduction, as well as shared their experiences in drug rehabilitation and social reintegration.
During its statement at the plenary session, Kazakhstan reaffirmed its strong commitment to international obligations in combating illicit drug trafficking and emphasized the need to strengthen global cooperation for an effective response to drug-related threats. Additionally, Kazakhstan called on member states to support its candidacy in the elections for the CND for the 2026-2029 term, which will take place in April 2025 in New York.
On the sidelines of the 68th CND session, the Kazakh delegation held bilateral meetings with representatives of other states and international organizations. Notably, a meeting took place with Oliver Stolpe, the UNODC Regional Representative for Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran, during which measures to strengthen counter-narcotics efforts were discussed.
As part of its participation in the session, the delegation also visited the UN laboratory for drug research. After demonstrating the laboratory’s operations, UN representatives expressed their willingness to establish cooperation with similar research centers in Kazakhstan to train Kazakh experts in advanced drug analysis methods.
