Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the issues of the EAEU

According to the Treaty on the Eurasian Economic Union, signed on May 29, 2014, the purpose of the Union is to ensure the freedom of movement of goods, services, capital and workforce, to create proper conditions for sustainable economic development of the Member States in order to improve the living standards of their population.

Kazakhstan adheres to the position that the integration processes within the EAEU are purely economic in nature. Traditionally, we note the unacceptability of assigning uncharacteristic functions to the Eurasian integration bodies, and we oppose the politicization of the Union.

In the context of discussing initiatives that go beyond the scope of the subject matter of the Treaty on the EAEU, including the application of retaliatory measures against the sanctions of third countries, we proceed from the fact that Western sanctions are primarily based on political motives and are directed against individual states, and not the entire EAEU.

We note that the Republic of Kazakhstan does not conduct any negotiations on "consolidated measures" of the EAEU states in response to the sanctions of other states. In working with partners in the Eurasian integration, we can only speak about joint actions on preventing negative impact of such sanctions on the socio-economic development of our states.
