Nur-Sultan – Washington, December 14, 2020 – A webinar on operation Jusan was held for members and staff of the US Congress. The event was organized by the Embassy of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the US-Kazakhstan Caucus (group of friends) in the House of Representatives of the US Congress for the purpose of discussing Kazakhstan's experience in repatriation of citizens from war zones and their reintegration into society. The main speakers of the webinar were Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Ashikbayev and UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism Fionnuala Ni Aolain.
In his welcoming speech, Ambassador Yerzhan Kazykhanov noted that operation Jusan is not only a valuable experience for Kazakhstan, but also a remarkable example for other countries. He also expressed hope that this project will be continued through the Center of Best Practices in Kazakhstan, aimed at developing and disseminating the knowledge and skills gained.
Mr. Ashikbayev elaborated on all stages of the operation, noting that, unfortunately, more than 80 countries of the world faced the problem of participation of citizens in the activities of terrorist organizations. He also expressed gratitude to the US partners for their support in the operation, and expressed Kazakhstan's readiness to share its experience with other interested countries.
In addition, Mr. Ashikbayev drew attention to the fact that operation Jusan is primarily a humanitarian mission aimed at protecting women and children who have become victims of a radical ideology.
In her speech, the UN Special Rapporteur emphasized the global leadership of Kazakhstan in the issue of repatriation and reintegration of returned persons from war zones and called on other countries to follow this example, expressly indicating the openness of the Government of Kazakhstan, and its willingness to cooperate and establish a dialogue.
