Kazakhstan and Timor-Leste Establish Diplomatic Relations

New York, 24 September 2026 – On the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Tileuberdi met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste Bendito dos Santos Freitas.

Following the meeting, the foreign ministers signed the Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the two countries.

The sides discussed prospects for developing political dialogue and cooperation  in the trade and economic, educational, cultural, tourism and agricultural sectors.

The Kazakh side congratulated Timor-Leste on its accession to ASEAN as its 11th Member State and expressed readiness to develop cooperation both bilaterally and within the framework of engagement with the Association.

Particular attention was paid to cooperation within the United Nations and other multilateral fora, including on sustainable development and climate change.

The sides reaffirmed their readiness to maintain regular contacts and continue efforts to expand bilateral relations.
