Ambassador Nathan Sales commends Kazakhstan's efforts in repatriating its citizens

On January 14th, 2021, Ambassador Nathan A. Sales, the U.S. State Department’s Coordinator for counterterrorism, reviewed what the U.S. State Department has accomplished and what lies ahead for counterterrorism efforts in the future.

AEI’s Katherine Zimmerman and the Council on Foreign Relations’ Bruce Hoffman joined for the conversation.

We sincerely thank Ambassador Nathan Sales for his remarks at the American Enterprise Institute and express our gratitude to the Bureau of Counterterrorism for the ongoing support of Kazakhstan's efforts in preventing terrorism.

During the online conversation Ambassador Sales says: "Foreign terrorist fighters is another area where we have made a great progress, but we should make more. I have mentioned 800 fighters and family members that have been repatriated to the countries of origin.

I am so proud to work with countries like Kazakhstan. And I also would be proud to work with countries in Western Europe that so far have been reluctant to take their citizens back.

Which was kind of a surprise, given that these are countries like the United States have good resources. Like the United States they have capable lawyers, courts and prison officials. Like the United States they have systems of justice that are consistent with the rule of law and it stood the test of time.

It really ought to make us all scratch our heads when an emerging democracy and emerging economy like Kazakhstan is leading the charge. And the established democracies of the West are looking around at each other.

I would like to see in the future more progress be made on the fighters and families too".
