According to the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance of Kazakhstan, the trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Japan in 2024 amounted to 1.78 billion USD, of which Kazakhstan's exports to Japan - 506.56 million USD and Japan's imports to Kazakhstan - 1.28 billion USD.
Kazakhstan's main exports to Japan are metals and metal products, mainly ferroalloys (over 50% of total exports), as well as oil, coal, briquettes, and similar types of solid fuel, chemical products, and plant-based products.
The main import items from Japan are cars, trucks, bulldozers, graders, and other special machinery, medical instruments and devices, tires, and rubber products.
Japan is one of the top 10 largest foreign investors in Kazakhstan, with a total investment volume of over 8 billion USD.
According to the National Bank of Kazakhstan, the gross volume of direct foreign investments from Japan in 2024 amounted to over 300 million USD.
As of January 1, 2024, 61 Japanese companies are registered in Kazakhstan in areas such as oil, gas, petrochemicals, metallurgy, finance, mining, car wholesale, telecommunications, wholesale of equipment, timber harvesting, logistics, healthcare, agriculture, and others.
The Joint Commission of the Government and Private Sectors of Kazakhstan and Japan on Economic Cooperation (JEP) is operating.
To enhance business contacts between the two countries, since 2017, a visa-free regime has been implemented for Japanese citizens for up to 30 days.
