The 14th meeting of the parties (COP 14) of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals is taking place in Samarkand

 

During the period from February 12 to 17, 2024, the 14th meeting (COP 14) of the parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (Bonn Convention) is taking place in the city of Samarkand. This event is attended by a Kazakh delegation led by the First Vice-Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurken Sharbiev.

Experts from 130 countries take part in the global meeting - more than 1,700 participants in total, including from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, the UAE, and Germany. At the opening of the meeting, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov, in his opening remarks on behalf of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, said that migratory birds are an integral part of the planet’s ecosystem, which are currently facing problems such as habitat destruction, climate change and poaching . The President of Uzbekistan noted that this issue should be resolved in the near future, and also drew attention to the active work in the state aimed at creating favorable conditions for such birds.

During the event, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of saving of the fauna of the Ustyurt Plateau. The purpose of the adopted memorandum is cross-border cooperation between countries on the conservation of key species of mammals and migratory animals of this region - such as the goitered gazelle, the Central Asian leopard, urial, kulan, etc.

At the ministerial meeting, Kazakhstan, along with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, joined the Memorandum of Understanding on the conservation of migratory birds of prey in Africa and Eurasia. Currently, the memorandum has been accepted by 60 countries from the regions of Eurasia and Africa and will operate within the framework of the Convention.
