STRASBOURG, 23 March 2022 – Hanne Juncher, Executive Secretary of the Council of Europe's Group of States against Corruption (GRECO), welcomed far-reaching reforms outlined by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his Address to the People of Kazakhstan.
During the meeting with the delegation from the Anti-Corruption Agency of Kazakhstan and representatives of the General Consulate in Strasbourg, Juncher was briefed on the main provisions of the President's Address, aimed at building a "New Kazakhstan".
Earlier on 22 March, Olzhas Bektenov, the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Agency of Kazakhstan, addressing online to the participants of the GRECO 50-member-states Plenary Meeting, made a detailed presentation on the Head of State's initiatives to transform the internal political system, enhance the fight against corruption, ensure an independent judiciary, develop a 'hearing state', decentralize and strengthen the role of civil society.
The distinguished European politician commended the ambitious initiatives and determined efforts of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in building a "New Kazakhstan". It was highlighted that these reforms are in line with the standards and principles of GRECO. Considering them as an important stage in the establishment of a modern Kazakhstan, the Head of GRECO noted that there is an "excellent opportunity" to realize the set goals in the fight against corruption and she wished a continuous success to the leadership of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The parties also discussed in detail the forthcoming work in the framework of GRECO, reaffirming their mutual commitment to expand the partnership.
For reference: Established in 1999, the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) is the Council of Europe's anti-corruption body dedicated to improve anti-corruption practices and monitoring compliance with Council of Europe standards. The Group comprises 50 member states. Kazakhstan has been a member of GRECO since January 2020.
