The Friendship Association with the Parliaments of Central Asia has been established in the Riksdag of Sweden. This important step by the Swedish politicians is aimed at creating a space for dialogue that will strengthen the multifaceted relationship between this largest Scandinavian country and the vast Central Asian region. These and other important tasks facing parliamentarians were discussed by the Chairperson of the Association, Hanna Westerin (S), at an online ceremony attended by a number of Riksdag members, including the First Deputy Speaker of the Riksdag, Åsa Lindestam (S). It is noteworthy that this group includes representatives of various political parties with a wide range of interests.

The Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Sweden Kairat Abdrakhmanov was invited to the first constituent meeting of the Association, who acquainted its participants with the relations of friendship and good-neighborliness that had developed in Central Asia, the great economic potential of the region, the state and prospects of traditionally close cooperation between Kazakhstan and Sweden, as well as the process of reforms in Kazakhstani society.

The Swedish parliamentarians showed particular interest in the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections, respectively, in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The participants exchanged views on other topical issues of international relations and geopolitics in Central Asia.

The timeliness of the creation of the Association was emphasized, the activities of which will serve as the foundation for strengthening close and regular relations, both between the parliaments and the peoples of Sweden and Central Asia. The interaction of the parliamentarians will facilitate the exchange of best practices for sustainable socio-economic and democratic development, cultural enrichment, investment attraction and trade development.
