Cultural and humanitarian cooperation and activities of the Kazakh national cultural Center "Elim-Ai"

The past 25 years were full of vivid creative activities and active cultural and humanitarian exchanges.

The Kazakh national cultural Center Elim-Ai emerged back in 2005 by the initiative of the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the Czech Republic, Sharip Omarov, jointly with Askar Galiev, Svetlana Shestakova, and Georgy Kopytov. Since 2005, the Center has been conducting annual Days of Kazakhstan in the Czech Republic.

Over the past two decades, the Czech public has become acquainted with the many creative Kazakh teams. Kazakh cinematographers were repeatedly noted at the Czech film festivals as Karlovy Vary, Febiofest and Zlatá Praha. Concerts of famous Kazakh musicians regularly take place in the concert halls of Prague. Within the framework of the International Humanitarian Exchange, Kazakh children's choirs successfully performed at the Prague Christmas international festival and the festival of children's creativity in the cities of Prague and Teplice. Works of artists of the Kazakh Art Academy Zhurgenov won the first prizes at the Saxon Plain Air 3rd International Art Exhibition.

In 2005, at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the works of two Kazakhstani filmmakers were presented: Hunter by Serik Aprymov and Stormy river, serene sea by Marat Sarul.

In one of the central concert halls of Prague - the Žofín Palace, performance of Kazakhstan's Chamber Orchestra "Camerata of Kazakhstan" was organized under the supervision of the People's Artist of Kazakhstan, Gaukhar Murzabekova.

In winter of 2005, the 6th International Festival of Choral Ensembles "Prague Christmas" was held in the Czech Republic. Pupils of the “Elim-ai" children's music and choral school from Almaty took part in the festival. “Elim-ai" managed to represent Kazakhstan's choir school with dignity and win a gold medal and a special jury prize for the original program.

In December of 2005, a wind quintet performed in Prague with an unusual program. This small team of Philharmonic of Astana has always successfully performed under the guidance of clarinetist, Gani Ismailov. The repertoire of the quintet included European and Kazakh music, but the main music played was that of the Czech composer, Antonin Reicha. The Czech composer was fond of the sound of woodwind instruments, and therefore became the author for a limited circle of musicians. Nevertheless, his writings to this day have not lost their splendor. Reicha drew inspiration from the Czech and Slovak folk music, preserving their original melody, Slavic softness, beauty, and freedom of expression. Moreover, the severity of his quintet's form allowed the composer to reveal all the features of the sound of wooden instruments he so loved.

For the first time in the history of the event, three Kazakhstani films were presented at the 13th International Film Festival "Febiofest," which took place on March of 2006 in Prague.

The delegation of the Kazakh National Academy of Music visited the Czech Republic in March 2017. During their meeting with the leadership of the Academy of Performing Arts of the Czech Republic, the exchange of students, the holding of master classes, the organization of joint concerts and cooperation in the implementation of international projects were discussed.

On March 10, 2007, a joint concert of the People's Artist of Kazakhstan, Aiman Musahodzhayeva, and the North-Czech Philharmonic Orchestra was held in the Palace Rudolfinum - Dvorak Hall. The participation of Kazakhstani filmmakers at the International Film Festivals in the Czech Republic triggered a considerable interest among European experts.

Within the framework of the International Television Festival, "Zlatá Praha" an Evening of Kazakhstan television with the participation of "Khabar" TV company was held on June 19, 2007, in Prague.

In the summer of 2007, a joint art exhibition of 13 Asian countries which have embassies in the Czech Republic took place in Prague. The countries are Kazakhstan, Japan, China, India, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Mongolia, the Republic of Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The exposition of Kazakhstan included works of artists from the "OYU" art gallery in Almaty, a copy of the "Golden Man," and archaeological finds of the Bronze Age. The joint event received a broadly positive response among the Czech public and foreign tourists and was a contribution to the further strengthening of cultural ties between Asian and European countries.

Within the framework of the "Days of Kazakhstan in Prague," a display of national clothes of the peoples of Kazakhstan was held on September 11, 2008, in the building of the House of National Minorities. According to the representatives of the "Elim-ay" center in the Czech Republic, the goal of this event was to familiarize the public of the Czech Republic with the culture, traditions, history and modern development of Kazakhstan. Traditional costumes of Kazakhs, Uzbeks, Russians, and costumes of other peoples living in Kazakhstan, were exhibited. An exhibition of artists and photographers from Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic, a presentation of art and documentary films of Kazakhstani masters, and seminars and roundtables on the issues of modern development of Kazakhstan and Kazakh-Czech relations also became a part of the program. In the framework of the "Days of Culture of Kazakhstan," evenings dedicated to the songs, music, history, and traditions of the Kazakh people were organized.

In the years 2008 and 2009 many cultural events took place in Prague: A conference dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Astana, Days of Kazakh culture in Prague, "Kazakhstan is the land of prosperity and peace" conference and performance of the Choral group of Almaty's gymnasium No. 46 "Altyn dauystar" in the Czech city of Teplice, performance of the joint Nordic symphony orchestra, which was conducted by a Kazakhstani musician, Alan Buribayev, and an exhibition of Leila Mahat's paintings.

On September 4, 2009, an opening ceremony of the Culture days of the Peoples of Kazakhstan in the Czech Republic took place in Prague. Within the framework of the event, a photo exhibition "Four years to Kazakhstan's Cultural Center in the Czech Republic, Elim-ay," an exhibition of children's art on a topic of "My Motherland - Kazakhstan," a documentary about Kazakhstan, and performances of Kazakh folk music performers were presented to the visitors.

On December 14, 2009, on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan, concerts of the world-class violinist, Ayman Musakhodzhayeva and the Kazakh State Chamber Orchestra “Academy of Soloists" took place in Rudolfinum. During the concert, the Orchestra played Mozart's Symphony No. 29/Rossini Sonata and works of the Kazakh composers.

In 2009, the 37th International Children's Exhibition of Fine Arts in Lidice took place. The exhibition was organized by the Lidice Memorial with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic, and the Czech Commission for UNESCO. Kazakh children have been presenting their works at this exhibition since Soviet-era.

In September 2011, Days of Kazakhstan cinema were held in Prague where the best works of Kazakhfilm were presented.

From September 6 to 27, 2012, the Kazakh Cultural Center in the Czech Republic, Elim-ai held a traditional festival "VI Days of Kazakhstan Culture in Prague" with the assistance of the Kazakh Embassy. The program of the event included an applied art exhibition, a photo exhibition, a concert, screening of a documentary about Kazakhstan, and tasting of Kazakh national dishes.

On October 24, 2012, as part of the official visit of the President of The Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, in the Czech Republic, a Memorandum of Cooperation on the creation of the Research Institute for Demography, Migration, and Sinology was signed between East Kazakhstan State University and Charles University.

On November 4, 2013, a solemn gala concert with the participation of the Kazakh opera singer, Nurzhamal Usenbayeva, was held in Prague. All the fees from the concert were directed to the treatment of the Czech children with cancer.

On November 29, 2013, a concert of Classical chamber music of the State Chamber Orchestra “Camerata of Kazakhstan" took place in Prague.

In July 2015, The Youth Chamber Choir of TURKSOY successfully performed in the cities of Prague and Plzen.

In the years 2015 and 2016, Days of the Culture of the Peoples of Kazakhstan in the Czech Republic were organized by the Kazakh cultural center Elim-ai.

On November 15, 2016, a concert of the famous Kazakh violinist Ayman Musahodzhayeva with the Eurasia Symphony Orchestra was successfully hosted in Rudolfinum.

In 2016, at the initiative of the Embassy of Kazakhstan, Czech readers could read the historical trilogy "Nomads" in the Czech language, which was written by the famous Kazakh writer, Ilyas Esenberlin. The book reveals the history, culture, and traditions of the Kazakh people.

In different years in the Czech Republic, books by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, "On the threshold of the Twenty-First Century," "The Critical Decade," "The Kazakhstan Way," and "Epicenter of Peace" were published in the Czech language.

In October 2016, the Kazakh Embassy, with the participation of the Czech leadership, filmed a documentary about the development of Kazakh-Czech relations over the past 25 years of our independence. The documentary was shown on the central TV channels of Kazakhstan.

In the spring of 2017, at the initiative of the Embassy, the Kazakhstan branch of Interstate Television and Radio Company Mir made a documentary film about the history of the Czech appearance on the territory of Kazakhstan on the example of Rudolf Mareček, a Czech internationalist who moved to Semirechye in 1918.

On December 4, 2017, at the initiative of the Embassy in Prague, a gala concert and a fashion show of the largest collection in Central Asia "Kazakhstan Fashion Week Astana" were held. The concert program began with the compositions of the ethnic neo-folklore duet "Arkaim" (Abzal Arykbayev and Anara Kasymova) on the ancient Kazakh instruments - shankobuz, dombra, and sazsyrnay. The event was followed by the performance of Zhamilya Serkebayeva, who masterly delivered famous Kazakh and European tunes. The spectators were delighted by the collections of the following designers: "Kurak Korpe," "Samidel" and "Aida KaumeNOVA," which reveal the culture and spiritual traditions of the Kazakh people.

On December 20, 2017, the opening of the Corner of Kazakh Literature was held in the National Library of the Czech Republic - Klementinum. It was accompanied by the ceremony of signing a memorandum of cooperation between the National Academic Library of Kazakhstan and the National Library of the Czech Republic. This project was implemented within the framework of the program initiated by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev "A look into the future: Modernization of Public consciousness." The staff of the National Academic Library of Kazakhstan, S.Zhusupova, and E. Toktarbay, donated approximately 200 historical, social, political, cognitive and educational books of Kazakh writers to the National Library of the Czech Republic.

In 2017, the Embassy initiated a project to create a book on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Chech Republic with two attached movies on CDs.

From September 17 to November 17, 2019, the exhibition “History and Culture of the Great Steppe”, organized by the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan, was held at the Czech National Museum. On January 27, 2020, the Klementinum National Library of the Czech Republic opened a Cultural and Information Center dedicated to the work of Abai. About 2500 Kazakhstan students study at Czech universities.
