Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Kazakhstan and Montenegro were established on July 14, 2006. An important milestone in the development of bilateral ties was the opening of the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Podgorica in August 2024. Its activities are aimed at promoting trade and economic cooperation, as well as strengthening cultural and humanitarian exchanges between the two countries.
High-level contacts
Kazakhstan and Montenegro maintain regular dialogue at the level of heads of state. On December 1–2, 2010, President of Montenegro Filip Vujanović paid a working visit to Kazakhstan to participate in the OSCE Summit. On September 20, 2023, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held talks with President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. In addition, on July 15–16, 2021, Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro Dritan Abazović visited Kazakhstan, where he held meetings with Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Askar Mamin and the leadership of several ministries.
Inter-parliamentary cooperation
In the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a friendship group with Montenegro has been established.
Among the significant events of inter-parliamentary cooperation were the visit of Deputy Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, Mr. Sergey Dyachenko, to Montenegro in March 2015, as well as the visit of the President of the Assembly (Parliament) of Montenegro, Mr. Ivan Brajović, to Kazakhstan to participate in the 4th Meeting of the Speakers of Parliaments of Eurasian countries “Greater Eurasia: Dialogue. Trust. Partnership” held in Nur-Sultan on September 22–25, 2019.
