The Canadian Network to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (CNANW) supported the Call for creation of a Global Alliance of Leaders for Nuclear Security and a Nuclear-weapon-free world

In a letter from The Canadian Network to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (CNANW), the organization consists of 19 non-governmental organizations in the field of WMD elimination, the CNANW Steering Committee praised the excellent work done by Kazakhstan to eliminate nuclear weapons from its territory and mitigate the consequences of large-scale nuclear tests over the years.

«We also appreciate the valuable role Kazakhstan played in the lead up to, and negotiation of, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW); and by becoming one of the first nations to sign and ratify this historic Treaty.

Additionally, the bold international leadership that Kazakhstan is demonstrating by initiating and promoting a Global Alliance of Leaders (GAL) for Nuclear Security and a Nuclear Weapons-free World.

We further applaud your cooperation with the United Nations to promulgate this important initiative and thank Kazakhstan for personally inviting the Government of Canada to join the Global Alliance of Leaders.

Your work coincides extremely well with CNANW priorities and efforts to encourage our Government to also play a leadership role internationally to advance nuclear disarmament.

The CNANW shall be very pleased to support your Government’s ‘Call’ upon world leaders to form this Global Alliance.

We believe that showcasing the key activities that Kazakhstan has undertaken to support nuclear disarmament will serve as an excellent example for other states, including Canada. These events will also be an opportunity to highlight the importance of the TPNW, the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty and other treaties that contribute to nuclear arms control and disarmament».

For more information about CNANW:

The Canadian Network to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (CNANW) was established in 1996 by representatives of national organizations in Canada who share the belief that nuclear weapons are immoral and should be destroyed.

CNANW has nineteen member organizations, which include religious communities, professional groups, peace organizations, and women's organizations. They all work in different ways to promote the elimination of nuclear weapons.

The CNANW calls on the Government of Canada to work with other countries to conclude a Convention that will establish a mandatory timetable for the elimination of all nuclear weapons in the world.

CNANW and its members work to educate the public, and conduct seminars, consultations, and meetings with civil society, officials, and policy makers in Canada and abroad. All this work is aimed at advancing the cause of nuclear disarmament and advancing the process of renouncing nuclear weapons.
