Kazakh adventure movie wins Ravenheart Festival award in Oslo

"Sweetie, You Won't Believe It!", a dark comedy from Kazakh film director, Ernar Nurgalieyv, received the Ravenheart International Film Festival prize.

The genre movie festival was held in Oslo on 26-29 August, showcasing over 100 films from all over the globe.

The movie from Kazakhstan won the "Festival Director's Choice" Award.

"This is the first-ever submission from Kazakhstan. And, this is one of our favorite works of the year," said Adam Losurdo, the American-Norwegian director, presenting the film to the Festival viewers at the Oslo Cinematheque.

"What attracted us to «Sweetie, You Won't Believe It!» was the film's energy and joy of storytelling. While it is a distinct Kazakh film with its characters and scenery, Kazakhstan's wide steppes are almost a character of its own. The film is even so still accessible to everybody regardless of their nationality. Its humor is precisely timed with the help of the talented cast. The cinematography is very good and manages to be classic in the vein of filmmakers such as John Ford and Sergio Leone and, at the same time, modern and dynamic. We could not be more pleased with «Sweetie…» for allowing us and our audience to discover Kazakh cinema than through this funny, exciting, and energetic film!" said Kay Olsen, the Norwegian director, after the award announcement.

The movie's plot starts with a quarrel between a young married couple waiting for their first baby. Dastan decides to escape for one day with his friends. Together they plan to go fishing and would have succeeded, but a series of unforeseen, sudden, and mysterious events intervene.
