Nairobi, 27 August 2025 – At the UN Environment headquarters, a meeting was held between the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Kenya, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the UN Office in Nairobi Barlybay Sadykov and the UN Under-Secretary-General - Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Ms. Inger Andersen.

During the meeting, the Ambassador informed his interlocutor about the measures taken by Kazakhstan at the national, regional and international levels in the field of environmental protection and overcoming the consequences of climate change. The Clean Kazakhstan initiative, measures to preserve biodiversity in Kazakhstan, solving the problems of the Caspian and Aral Seas, water resources, participation in international forums and initiatives, including “One Water Vision”, were discussed in detail. It was noted that environmental protection and overcoming the consequences of climate change are among the priorities in Kazakhstan's domestic and foreign policy, and Astana will always actively interact with international partners, including the UN, in order to find balanced solutions and take effective measures in the field of ecology.

The parties discussed current issues of interaction between Kazakhstan and UNEP, plans for developing cooperation in the field of the environment, as well as issues of participation of the Kazakh delegation in events held by UNEP.

Particular attention was paid to discussing issues of interaction with UNEP in the preparation and holding of the Regional Ecological Summit (RES), which will be held on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev in Astana in 2026. An agreement was reached on close cooperation in preparing for the Summit, including the development of a number of draft documents and regional initiatives that are planned to be adopted during the RES.

In addition, issues were discussed regarding the participation of the Kazakh delegation in the 7th session of the UN Environment Assembly, which will be held on December 8-12, 2025 in Nairobi, and the holding of the side-event by Kazakhstan on the topic “Water, Climate and Environmental Sustainability” within the framework of this Assembly.

Ms. I.Andersen highly appreciated the efforts and initiatives of Kazakhstan to address environmental issues, expressed gratitude to the Kazakh side for the support of UNEP activities, and assured that UNEP is ready to provide expert assistance in the implementation of initiatives and projects of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the field of ecology and sustainable development. She particularly noted Kazakhstan's leadership in promoting sustainable development issues and the opening of the UN Centre for Sustainable Development for Central Asia and Afghanistan, as well as measures to preserve biodiversity, including the saiga population.

An agreement was reached to continue cooperation on issues of mutual interest in the field of the environment, support in the implementation of environmental projects and holding events at various levels, and a willingness was expressed to consider further joint measures to expand cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN Environment Programme.
