On September 16, 1992, diplomatic relations were established between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Moldova.
In 1994, the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan was opened in Ukraine and concurrently in the Republic of Moldova.
In 2014, the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan opened in Chisinau.
By the Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 30, 2020, the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Chisinau was transformed into the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Republic of Moldova.
Since April 28, 2022, Almat Aidarbekov has been appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Republic of Moldova.
Diplomatic relations with the Moldovan side are maintained through the Embassy of the Republic of Moldova in the Russian Federation (concurrently in the Republic of Kazakhstan).
Since March 2022, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Moldova to the Russian Federation is Lilian Darius (since November 14, 2022 – Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the Republic of Kazakhstan concurrently).
A regular political dialogue has been established between Kazakhstan and Moldova, both within the framework of bilateral contacts and within the framework of regular meetings at international venues.
Important milestones of the modern stage of Kazakh-Moldovan relations were mutual visits at the highest level: the official visit of the President of the Republic of Moldova P.Luchinsky to Kazakhstan (June 1999), the official visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N.Nazarbayev to the Republic of Moldova (September 2003).
On September 20, 2022, on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, a meeting of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Tokaev with the President of the Republic of Moldova M.Sandu was held.
The legal framework of bilateral cooperation consists of 31 international treaties and agreements, 20 of which were signed at the interstate and intergovernmental levels.
The basic bilateral documents regulating economic cooperation between the two states are the Free Trade Agreement of 1995, which provides for the abolition and non-further application of tariff and quantitative restrictions in mutual trade, as well as the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on Trade and Economic Cooperation, signed on March 16, 2018.
Kazakhstan and Moldova closely cooperate within the framework of international organizations. The Republic of Moldova supported the candidacy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the elections for non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2017-2018, as well as Kazakhstan's accession to the four target conventions of the Council of Europe in the field of criminal justice.
Fruitful inter-parliamentary ties have been built. Active cooperation has been established within the framework of international parliamentary structures – the OSCE PA, PACE, etc.
