Ambassador of Kazakhstan Meets with Rector of ELTE University to Strengthen Academic Ties

Budapest, 26 March 2025 – Abzal Saparbekuly, the Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Hungary held a meeting with Prof. Dr. László Borhy, Rector of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) and President of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference.

Founded in 1635, ELTE is the oldest and one of the most prestigious universities in Hungary, with a long-standing tradition in the humanities, legal studies, and scientific research. During the meeting, Rector Borhy provided an overview of ELTE’s historic legacy, academic structure, and its broad network of faculties and research institutes. He also highlighted the university’s ongoing cooperation with higher education institutions in Kazakhstan.

As President of the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference, Prof. Borhy expressed strong interest in advancing bilateral academic relations and welcomed the proposal to organize a Hungarian–Kazakh Rectors’ Forum, aimed at fostering dialogue and institutional cooperation between universities of the two countries.

Ambassador Saparbekuly briefed the Rector on the growing educational cooperation between Kazakhstan and Hungary and expressed appreciation for ELTE’s active role in hosting Kazakh students and scholars. He noted that over 90 Kazakh students are currently enrolled at ELTE, which reflects the increasing academic interest of Kazakh youth in Hungarian higher education.

The Ambassador also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the Department of Turkic Studies at ELTE and emphasized Kazakhstan’s interest in expanding Kazakh language courses. Discussions touched upon the potential establishment of a Kazakh language courses, as well as opportunities for joint research, academic publications, and Kazakhstan-themed cultural events at ELTE.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening educational and cultural cooperation, recognizing the shared benefits of closer engagement between the academic communities of Hungary and Kazakhstan.
