On 29 May 2024 KMG International Group (Rompetrol) put into operation at the Petromidia refinery in Novodari two modern reactors whose role is to process and hydrotreat diesel blends in order to eliminate sulphur compounds and, in fact, to obtain EURO-5 components for the final production of diesel. The investment in the project is in the order of 16 million USD dollars.
At the official opening ceremony of the facility was attended by the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Romania E.Ali and State Counsellor to the Prime Minister of Romania F.Spataru.
In his welcoming speech, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Romania emphasized that Kazakhstan acts as a reliable energy and socio-economic partner of Romania and over the past 17 years, represented by the national oil and gas company KazMunaiGas (shareholder of Rompetrol), has demonstrated its commitment in supporting and developing Romania's investment activities.
The Kazakh diplomat added that the commissioning of the new reactors at the plant will create an additional basis for the sustainability of the energy system and further increase the flow of investment in the country's economic sectors.
F.Spataru, State Advisor to the Prime Minister of Romania, noted that the launch of the new project at the plant is important not only for Romania, but also for the whole region, in terms of the use of environmentally friendly energy resources on the way of decarbonization and achieving carbon neutrality.
In Spataru's opinion, in order to maintain the competitiveness of the business, KMG International Group needs to continue implementing new technologies and projects, including in the field of petrochemicals, changing production processes, improving energy efficiency and revising additional routes for transporting energy resources, including in the direction of the Middle Corridor.
KMGI's refining capacity accounts for 46.3% of Romania's total refining capacity (5.9 million tons per year). Kazakh oil accounts for about 37% of the consumption of all Romanian refineries.
The Company is the third largest taxpayer in Romania and one of Romania's largest employers, directly providing over 15,500 jobs throughout the country.
