Deputy Chair of Kazakhstan’s Senate Askar Shakirov elected Vice-President of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly

Deputy Chair of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Askar Shakirov attended the summer session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly that took place in Vienna (Austria).

During the meeting of the Standing Committee and the plenary session, the parliamentarians discussed the Assembly’s recent activities and priorities reviewed the most relevant issues on the international agenda.

On the sidelines of the session, Shakirov met with the heads of the national delegations of Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Sweden, and the USA, including the newly elected OSCE PA President Margareta Cederfelt. He briefed his European counterparts about the three packages of democratic reforms implemented within the framework of the modernization agenda of Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. The OSCE parliamentarians expressed support for the political and socio-economic transformations in the country, implemented at the initiative of the Kazakh leader.

During the meeting with the head of the Danish delegation Peter Juel-Jensen, an agreement was reached on the formation of a group of friends with Central Asia in the Danish Parliament with an emphasis on the development of inter-parliamentary dialogue with Kazakhstan.

Within the framework of the session, elections were held to the Assembly’s leadership, following which Deputy Chair of Kazakhstan’s Senate Askar Shakirov was elected Vice President of the OSCE PA.
