25 June 2026, Brussels – Following the official visit of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Brussels, the Permanent Representation of Kazakhstan to the European Union held a series of events in the European Parliament dedicated to discussing the outcomes of the visit and prospects for the development of the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and the EU.
A meeting took place between the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the European Union, Roman Vassilenko, and the Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Central Asia (DCAS), Žygimantas Pranckevicius. J. Pranckevicius highly assessed the reached agreements, noting the transition of relations between Kazakhstan and the EU to a new level of strategic partnership. She welcomed the conclusion of negotiations on the Agreements on visa facilitation and readmission and confirmed the European Parliament’s support for these agreements.
Separately, a special briefing of the Ambassador of Kazakhstan for Members of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Central Asia was held. During the briefing, the outcomes of the negotiations between the President of Kazakhstan and the President of the European Council António Costa and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen were presented. A confirmation of mutual commitment to the implementation of the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, as well as to the development of cooperation in the fields of transport, energy, critical raw materials, digital transformation, and new technologies, was noted.
Special attention was paid to the practical results of the visit, including the signing of more than 30 commercial agreements worth over USD 12 billion, the development of transport and logistics infrastructure, cooperation in the field of critical raw materials, and engagement with European financial institutions.
Humanitarian outcomes of the visit were also presented, including the conclusion of negotiations on visa facilitation and readmission agreements, as well as the signing of the Horizontal Air Transport Agreement between Kazakhstan and the EU.
During the discussion, Members of the European Parliament underlined the importance of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (“Middle Corridor”) and highlighted the importance of ongoing democratic reforms in Kazakhstan.
On 25 June, the roundtable “Kazakhstan and the European Union: Shaping a New Chapter of Strategic Partnership” took place, organised by representatives of the European People’s Party (EPP) with the support of the Permanent Representation of Kazakhstan. The initiators were Member of the European Parliament Bureau Andrey Kovatchev and DCAS member Tomáš Zdechovský.
The event brought together representatives of the diplomatic corps, business community, expert community, and think tanks. The session was moderated by Diplomatic World Project Director Alberto Turkstra. Speakers included Ambassador Roman Vassilenko, Chair of the European Parliament Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly Sergey Lagodinsky, Professor of the Catholic University of Lille Olivier Arifon, President of the Brussels Energy Club Marat Terterov, and Marie Curie EU research fellow Maurizio Gerri.
Opening the event, Andrey Kovatchev emphasized Kazakhstan’s role as a key partner of the EU in Central Asia and its growing importance for Europe’s economic resilience, energy security, and green transition goals. Sergey Lagodinsky welcomed the implementation of joint projects in transport and digital connectivity. Participants discussed prospects for cooperation in energy, transport, critical raw materials, regional security, and political modernization of Kazakhstan.
In addition, a brief exchange took place on the sidelines of the events between Roman Vassilenko and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. The parties discussed the outcomes of the visit and issues of further development of interparliamentary cooperation. R. Metsola welcomed the holding of events in the European Parliament and confirmed interest in further strengthening engagement with Kazakhstan.
Following the events, Members of the European Parliament highly assessed the outcomes of the negotiations of the President of Kazakhstan in Brussels, welcomed the transition of bilateral relations to the level of strategic partnership, supported the conclusion of negotiations on visa facilitation and readmission agreements, and confirmed readiness to support the advancement of relevant procedures within the European Parliament.
