General information
31 December 1991 - the Federal Republic of Germany recognized the sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
11 February 1992 - established diplomatic relations.
In December 1992, the Federal Republic of Germany opened the Embassy in Almaty.
In September 1993, the Republic of Kazakhstan opened the Embassy in Bonn, in 1999 it was relocated to Berlin.
In July 2022 N.Onzhanov was appointed as the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Federal Republic of Germany.
Since August 2021, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Republic of Kazakhstan is M.Iversen.
Political cooperation

The First President of Kazakhstan – Elbasy N.Nazarbayev has paid 7 official (в 1992, 1997, 2001, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2012 гг.) и 1 working (2015 г.) visits to Germany.
The President K.Tokayev has paid an official visit to Berlin on 5-6 December, 2019; on 14-16 February 2020 attended the International Security Conference Munich, on 28 September 2023, the Head of State paid second official visit and on 29 September participated the first C5+Germany Summit.
Federal Presidents of the Federal Republic of Germany have visited Kazakhstan 4 times: R.Herzog (1995 г.), H.Köhler (2008 г.) и and F.-W.Steinmeier (2017, 2023 гг.). Federal Chancellors of the Federal Republic of Germany visited Kazakhstan 3 times: G.Schröder (2003) and A.Merkel (July, December 2010).

Germany was visited by: Prime Minister S.Akhmetov (2012), Deputy Prime Minister R.Sklyar (October 2019, January 2020, October 2021, November 2023), Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Saudabaev (2009), E.Kazykhan (July, December 2011), E.Idrisov (2013, 2016), B.Atamkulov (August 2019), Special Envoy of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan for International Cooperation E.Kazykhan (2021), Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs M.Tleuberdi (January 2020, December 2022).
On 11 February 2022 in Astana and 28 March 2023 in Berlin were held political consultations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Inter-parliamentary cooperation
Kazakhstan authorities visited Germany:
Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev played a part at the Munich Security Conference (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019);
- Chairman of the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan N.Nigmatulin (2012 г.);
- Deputy Chairman of the Majilis of the Parliament of Kazakhstan - Special Representative of the President of Kazakhstan on advancing of candidacy of the Republic of Kazakhstan to non-permanent members of the UN Security Council D.Nazarbayev (2015 г.).
Germany authorities visited Kazakhstan:
- Bundestag President N.Lammert (2010 г.),
- Bundestag Vice-President J.Singhammer (2015 г.), H.-P.Friedrich (September 2019).
Established Inter-parliamentary friendship groups («Kazakhstan-Germany») between Majilis of Kazakhstan and и Bundestag of Germany («Germany – Central Asia»). On 19-21 February 2023, the chairman O. Schmidt (AfG) of the parliamentary group «Germany-Central Asia» with delegation visited Kazakhstan.
Bilateral and multilateral cooperation
Kazakhstan and Germany actively cooperate within the framework of international organisations: UN, UNHRC, OSCE, etc.
Kazakhstan supported the resolution on Arms Trade Treaty initiated by Germany.
In December 2021, Germany for the first time «abstained» the resolution initiated by Kazakhstan «On the Universal Declaration on Achieving a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World».
In 2007 Germany initiated EU Strategy for Partnership with Central Asia and took active part in the development of the new Strategy «EU and Central Asia: New Opportunities for a Stronger Partnership».
Kazakhstan is a member of the Bonn Initiative for a peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan, launched by Germany in 2001.
Germany launched the project called Water Initiative for Central Asia (Berlin Process, 2008-2019). In January 2020, Germany presented a new initiative – «Green Central Asia» («Зеленая Центральная Азия »).
