Kazakhstan celebrates Republic Day

On October 25, Kazakhstan celebrates a national holiday - Republic Day.

On October 25, 1990, the Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Kazakhstan was adopted. The declaration proclaimed the sovereignty of the Kazakh SSR and declared the political and legal foundations of Kazakhstan as an independent state. For the first time, such principles of statehood as the integrity, indivisibility and inviolability of the territory, the development of the culture of peoples and their languages, and the strengthening of national identity were enshrined in it.

October 25 was included in the list of public holidays in 2001. In 2009, by decree of the First President of the country, Republic Day was excluded from the list of public holidays.

Speaking at the first meeting of the National Kurultai on June 16, 2022, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed to return the status of a national holiday to Republic Day.

In September, deputies of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, after considering the Mazhilis, adopted the Law “On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Cinematography, Culture and Holidays”. In particular, amendments were made to the Law “On Holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan”, which establish the Republic Day as a national holiday on October 25 and the Independence Day as a public holiday on December 16.
