Commemoration of Ethiopia's Patriots' Victory Day

Commemoration of Ethiopia's Patriots' Victory Day

Addis Ababa, May 5, 2025 – The Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Ethiopia participated in the solemn Ceremony commemorating the 84th Anniversary of Ethiopia's Patriots' Victory Day.

The event took place at the Patriots' Victory Memorial Monument in Addis Ababa, with the attendance of the country's leadership, representatives from the Veterans Association, the Ministry of Defense, the diplomatic corps, and the city's public.

In his address, the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Taye Atske Selassie, emphasized that "the patriots' victory was a historic stand against fascism and colonialism and served as a vivid example and inspiration for resistance against fascism worldwide." He called for honoring the memory of the brave defenders – the patriots of Ethiopia – who sacrificed their lives for the bright future of their country.

For reference: In 1935, fascist Italy launched an aggressive war against Ethiopia. Despite the occupation, the Ethiopian people organized a broad resistance movement that included both military actions and civil disobedience. The guerrilla war lasted until 1941, when Ethiopian detachments, together with the Allied forces of the anti-Hitler Coalition, reoccupied the capital city of Addis Ababa. On May 5, 1941, Emperor Haile Selassie returned to the country, and annually on May 5th, Ethiopia celebrates Patriots' Day in memory of those who gave their lives for the freedom of the country.
