Akim of the Karaganda region Ermaganbet Bulekpayev, military personnel, government officials, public figures and residents of the region laid flowers at the Eternal Flame and honored the memory of those killed in the Great Patriotic War with a minute of silence.
The head of the region also visited veterans at home and congratulated them on Victory Day.
Participants of the Great Patriotic War 98-year-old Pavel Olenchenko and Maria Shinkevich shared their history of the war.
Pavel Olenchenko was born in the Saratov region. He was drafted into the war in 1943. He fought as part of the 48th heavy Mortar Brigade as a signalman. He took part in the battles for the capture of Berlin. He was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the second degree, medals "For Military Merit", "For the capture of Berlin", "For the victory over Germany".
A native of the village of Rostovka, Bukhar-Zhyrau district, Maria Shinkevich was called up for military service at the age of 19. She received training at the women's sniper school. She fought on the third Belorussian and first Ukrainian fronts. Participated in the liberation of Czechoslovakia. I met the victory in Prague. She was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the second degree, two medals "For Bravery", "For the Victory over Germany", "Marshal of the Soviet Union G. K. Zhukov", "For the Liberation of Ukraine".
– Victory Day is a great holiday and at the same time a day of mourning. It is your merit that today we live in a peaceful country. We will always remember your feat and tell young people about it. I wish you good health and long, long years of life! – said Ermaganbet Bulekpayev.
The orchestra also pleases veterans on a holiday – near the entrances of the houses where they live, musicians perform songs of the war years.
To date, 13 participants of the Great Patriotic War live in the Karaganda region.
