The largest railway project began to be implemented in Kazakhstan

On Thursday, November 17, the construction of the second tracks on the Dostyk – Moyynty railway section began in the Karaganda region as part of the National Project "Strong Regions — the driver of the country's development".

The launch of a new railway line with a length of 836 km will contribute to the uninterrupted export of domestic products and the growth of the transit potential of the country. During the construction, it is planned to erect 419 artificial structures (5 large bridges, 87 small and medium bridges, 288 culverts, 14 road overpasses), as well as energy and communications facilities. The construction should be completed in the 4th quarter of 2025.

Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan Alikhan Smailov took part in the launch ceremony in the teleconference mode.

In his speech, he noted that a strategically important project is being implemented on behalf of the Head of State Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and is of great importance for the development of the transit and transport potential of the republic.

Thus, according to him, over the past five years, the volume of transit container traffic in the country has increased 4.4 times, for 10 months of this year, the cargo turnover in the export direction amounted to over 74 billion ton-kilometers, which is 11% more than last year.

In this regard, it was decided to implement a number of major infrastructure projects in the railway industry, which will significantly increase capacity. Among them are the Dostyk – Moynty, Bakhty – Ayagoz, Darbaza – Maktaaral, obvodnaya line around Almaty, etc.

"Today we are launching the largest railway project. It will increase the capacity of the section by 5 times – from 12 to 60 pairs of trains, and will also completely remove the issues of transportation of Kazakhstani exporters in this direction," Alikhan Smailov said.

The Prime Minister stressed that when the project is implemented, the share of local content will exceed 80%. In particular, the production of sleepers, rails, transformers, the supply of inert materials, sand and crushed stone will be carried out by local companies. In addition, about 3,700 people will be involved in the construction, and 500 people will receive permanent jobs during the operation of the railway line.

"The cumulative effect of its implementation will further increase budget revenues by 4.1 trillion tenge over 20 years," Alikhan Smailov said, launching work on a new railway section.

The official ceremony was also attended by the heads of central and local executive state bodies, “Samruk-Kazyna” Fund, JSC NC “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy”, railway workers and industry veterans.
