Kazakhstan – Active Participant in the UN Convention Against Corruption

From November 4 to 8, the delegation of the Anti-Corruption Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan, at the invitation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), participated in the meeting of the Group for Reviewing the Implementation of the UN Convention Against Corruption, which was held in Vienna, Austria.

Kazakhstan is taking part in the second cycle of the first phase of the review process, along with 191 countries that have joined this key international document.

As part of this review, participating countries are assessed for compliance with the Convention’s requirements in their national legislation.

In the first phase, completed in February 2019, assessments were made on issues such as the criminal prosecution of corruption, law enforcement activities, and international cooperation.

Experts from anti-corruption authorities of other countries act as reviewers.

In the current cycle, experts from China and the Philippines are analyzing Kazakhstans measures in corruption prevention and asset recovery.

Kazakhstani experts, in turn, are conducting an evaluation of Nicaragua.

The key topic of the recent meeting was the improvement of the review mechanism for monitoring the implementation of the Convention.

Primary discussion topics included the initiative to create a unified electronic platform for tracking recommendations, involving independent experts and civil society representatives in the review process, and enhancing the professional training of evaluators.

The Kazakhstani delegation participated in a thematic panel session, where they provided an overview of the measures being implemented to advance the anti-corruption agenda, legislative initiatives, and practical results in the anti-corruption.

Additionally, the event featured meetings and discussions with international partners aimed at sharing experiences and ensuring the successful implementation of the Convention’s provisions into national legislation.

Overall, expanding international cooperation and finding new effective tools to prevent corruption remain priority areas for the Anti-Corruption Service of Kazakhstan.
